How these numbers are worked out
Country price level: World Bank International Comparison Program, household consumption prices vs exchange rate (PA.NUS.PRVT.PP and PA.NUS.FCRF), latest year available.
Turned into travel costs: calibrated to published traveller budgets: United States about $249/day average (Budget Your Trip data via HelloSafe), Bali mid-range $80–150/day (2026 guides). Tourist prices rise slower than local prices, so the model dampens the gap.
Detailed cities: Bali, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Kuala Lumpur, Tokyo, Paris, London, New York and Barcelona use published 2026 daily budgets. The split between stay, food, transport and activities is our estimate.
City list: 33,000+ cities and towns (population 15,000+) from
GeoNames (CC BY 4.0). Cities without their own data use the national average; flights are worked out from the city itself.
Flights: distance-based estimate between the two cities, checked against published 2026 fares. Always check the live fare.
Entry rules: UK passports: UK government travel advice (FCDO). US passports: US State Department. Other passports: open Passport Index dataset, marked unofficial.
